About the author

Giovanni Boccaccio

1313 Florence – 1375 Certaldo · Italian author and poet

Giovanni Boccaccio was born in 1313, probably in Florence or Certaldo, the son of a merchant banker, and spent his youth in Naples learning the trade and then the law, while he read and wrote poetry. He returned to Florence, which the Black Death devastated in 1348. Soon after he wrote the Decameron, a hundred tales told by ten young people who leave the plague-struck city for a country villa. The book is witty, frank and endlessly inventive. Later in life he became a friend of Petrarch, wrote in Latin on famous women and pagan gods, and gave public lectures on Dante.
